Alaska has been my home for 37 years. I enjoy what Alaska has to offer, to include hiking, paragliding, rock-climbing, riding my Harley and Ural, and touring the state in our motor home. I am happily married to Linda Vecera Shaw who was born, raised and educated in Anchorage and we have been together for 33 years. We have resided in the district for 18 years.
I served in uniform for 24 years, retiring in 1993. My time consisted of nine years active duty with the US Navy SEAL's, including two tours to Vietnam; eight years with the SEAL Reserve component; and seven years with the Alaska Army National Guard (Airborne).
State Government Experience:
I retired from the State of Alaska after 20 years of service. In 1999, I was appointed to the position of State Director of Veterans Affairs in Anchorage, in which I was responsible for serving the needs of Alaskan veterans and ensuring they received the benefits they were due.
In 1993, I was appointed to the position of Director of the Police Standards Council in Juneau, in which I was responsible for the certification and training of all Alaska Police Departments, Corrections, and the Alaska State Troopers.
In 1988, I accepted an Instructor position at the State Trooper Academy in Sitka. In 1983, I was hired by the Department of Public Safety as an Emergency Response Specialist, based at Anchorage Trooper Headquarters. My primary responsibilities included Statewide Search and Rescue Coordination and South Central Emergency Response.
These administrative positions gave me direct legislative experience with the opportunity for presenting budgets and initiating and lobbying for legislation on behalf of public safety and veterans.
